About Picos de Europa
✜ Established in 1918, Picos de Europa, Peaks of Europe, is Spain’s first National Park.
✜ According to legend, the imposing mountain range was the first sight of land for ships returning from the ‘Voyages of Discovery’ in the 1400’s.
✜ Picos de Europa National Park is a designated Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a surface of 64.600 hectares, its mountains reach 2.600m/8200ft, and its 1,367 inhabitants live harmoniously with nature.
✜ This Natural Paradise is home to endangered species, including; Wolf, Brown Bear, Chamois,Western Capercaillie, Golden Eagle, Alpine Newt, and Atlantic salmon. The climate is temperate, with lush deciduous vegetation.
✜ The region was inhabited by early communities of hunter gatherers. Ancient Celtic heritage is present to this day. Locals are renowned for their their warmth, hospitality and keen sense of identity.
